Immigration Act 2009
The Immigration Act 2009 came into force on 29 November 2010. The new Act modernises New Zealand’s immigration laws. However, it does not make major changes to the criteria under which people apply to travel to and stay in New Zealand.
Visa Waiver for Taiwanese Visitors
Taiwanese passport holders travelling to New Zealand for less than three months on business, as tourists, to visit friends or relatives or for short-term study under three months, are not required to apply for a visa before they travel.
Taiwanese passport holders wishing to stay in New Zealand for more than three months, or to live, work, marry or undertake courses of study longer than three months will still need to apply for a visa. The Visa Unit of the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office (NZCIO) facilitates temporary class visa applications, permanent resident visa, second or subsequent resident visa, and visa transfer applications made by current or former resident visa holders.
Taiwanese passport holders wishing to travel to New Zealand under the visa waiver programme must have the right to reside permanently in Taiwan and must satisfy New Zealand authorities upon arrival in New Zealand that they meet the standard visa admission requirements. These include being of good health and character, providing travel tickets or evidence of onward travel arrangements and evidence of funds for maintenance or of sponsorship while in New Zealand.
