What the NZCIO does
New Zealand does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. In the absence of diplomatic relations the Wellington Employers' Chamber of Commerce operates the New Zealand Commerce and Industry Office (NZCIO) in Taipei.
New Zealand's one China policy allows it to develop fully its trade, economic and cultural interests with Taiwan. The pursuit and development of these interests is the responsibility of the NZCIO. The office is New Zealand’s interface with the Government and people of Taiwan.
The office is a subsidiary of the Wellington Employers' Chamber of Commerce. It is staffed by officers either employed directly by the NZCIO or seconded from relevant New Zealand departments and agencies. At present 17 people are employed at the NZCIO in Taipei.
The NZCIO is headed by the Director and comprises two units:
- the Economic and General Affairs Unit which handles policy issues
- the New Zealand Trade Development Centre assists New Zealand businesses doing business in Taiwan, and Taiwanese businesses doing business with New Zealand.
